Inside the citizenship application: the form, the documents, and the Journey

The Singapore citizenship application is submitted online through ICA’s e-Service, and it asks for a detailed picture of your life here: your PR history, employment and income, family members, education, and your ties to Singapore. Each part needs a specific set of supporting documents, uploaded and consistent with one another.

As with any ICA application, small mismatches are what quietly weaken a file, a salary that does not match your tax records, dates that do not line up, or a missing translation. The assessor reads the whole application at once, so consistency across every field and document counts.

Approved applicants then complete the Singapore Citizenship Journey and take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty at a ceremony before receiving the pink NRIC. We prepare and submit the application for you so what ICA receives is clean, complete and easy to assess.

What ICA looks for

What shapes a citizenship decision

Meeting the eligibility conditions lets you apply, but it does not decide the outcome. Citizenship is assessed holistically and granted at the authorities’ discretion, so meeting the criteria does not guarantee approval. There is no published points score.

In practice, the things that tend to matter include:

  • How settled and stable your life in Singapore is, especially your years as a PR
  • Your family ties to Singapore, and how genuinely you have put down roots
  • Your employment, income and the contribution you make
  • Your genuine integration into, and commitment to, Singapore
  • A consistent, honest application that matches your circumstances
Who can apply

Who is eligible for Singapore Citizenship?

Citizenship is granted by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and, for most people, follows permanent residence. Meeting a route lets you apply; the strength of your overall case, and the authorities’ discretion, decide the outcome.

Permanent residents

The most common route. Adult permanent residents who have held PR for the qualifying period, and are at least 21, may apply for citizenship. For most people, citizenship follows a genuine, settled period as a PR.

Spouse of a Singapore citizen

The foreign spouse of a Singapore citizen has a distinct route, generally involving a period of marriage and permanent residence. Marriage shapes the route but does not remove the qualifying requirements.

Children of a Singapore citizen

A child of a Singapore citizen may be eligible to be registered as a citizen, often through a more direct route than an unrelated adult applicant, depending on the child’s circumstances.

Important

You must renounce your other citizenship

Singapore does not generally allow adults to hold dual citizenship, so becoming a citizen usually means renouncing your existing nationality. This is a significant, largely irreversible step, and for many people it is the most important part of the decision. We make sure you understand it fully before you commit.

Timeline

How long it takes

The application itself is assessed over several months, and the exact time varies by case. In the wider picture, the longest part is usually the qualifying years as a PR that come before you can apply, not the processing. For current processing times, ICA is the authoritative source.

On approval

Becoming a citizen

Approval is followed by the Singapore Citizenship Journey, the oath ceremony and renunciation of your previous citizenship, after which you register and receive your pink NRIC. Male citizens and their families should also understand national service obligations.

Good questions

Frequently asked

Do I need to be a PR before applying for citizenship?

For most adults, yes. Citizenship generally follows permanent residence, and you usually need to have held PR for a qualifying period before you can apply. The main exception involves children of citizens. The free assessment confirms the right route for you.

Can I keep my other citizenship?

Generally no. Singapore does not allow adults to hold dual citizenship, so becoming a citizen usually means renouncing your existing nationality. It is a significant, largely irreversible step, and we make sure you understand it before you commit.

How long does the citizenship application take?

The application is assessed over several months, and the exact time varies by case. The longest part of the overall journey is usually the qualifying years as a PR beforehand, not the processing. For current processing times, ICA is the authoritative source.

What if my application was unsuccessful before?

That is often when specialist help matters most. We review what may have been weak, build a stronger application, and support appeals and reapplications for genuine cases, rather than resubmitting the same case and hoping for a different result.

Do male applicants have national service obligations?

National service obligations apply to males, and how they are met can matter for citizenship and for the family. We help you understand what applies to your situation and point you to the relevant authorities for the specifics.

Can I apply for Singapore citizenship online?

Yes. The application is made through ICA’s official online service. We prepare and present your case and make sure it is submitted correctly, with the right documents, the first time.
